Addictions Counseling
(Level I Addiction Counseling only)
The goal of Level I addiction treatment is to provide services at the lowest level of treatment in the form of outpatient services. The purpose is to address early-stage addiction or substance abuse issues and to provide education, counseling and support to individuals seeking help. The specific combination of services will depend on the individual's needs, the type of addiction, and the treatment setting. Successful addiction treatment often involves a combination of therapeutic approaches tailored to the unique circumstances of each person seeking help.
Levels of Addiction Counseling in the State of Oregon
Level I is designed to assist those who are able to stop their choice of addiction and learn about all aspects of addiction. In outpatient treatment programs clients are required to attend groups 1x per week, and meet with their counselor 1x a month. Random urine testing and self-help meetings are also required for the duration of treatment. This formal treatment program usually lasts between 3-4 months in duration. The majority of individuals who attend these groups are there because they received a DUI and are involved with the court system.
Level II is referred to as intensive outpatient treatment. Usually the individual attends groups 3x per week, meets with a counselor 1x per month and must demonstrate sobriety by submitting clean urine samples. Usually, the individual is mandated to also attend self-help meetings for the duration of the treatment program. This program typically lasts between 4-6 months in duration. The majority of individuals who attend these groups are there because they received a DUI and are involved with the court system.
Level III is also known as medical detoxification. This is done in a medically supervised hospital type environment. Once the individual has completed the medical detoxification process, they are discharged into either intensive outpatient treatment or into residential treatment. Some programs include basic counseling. Medical detoxification can last typically between 3 and 14 days, depending on health condition, and what the person is coming off of.
Level IV is also known as residential treatment. Each residential program is designed differently in duration. Because it is often expensive, it is usually paid for by insurance. The duration can typically last between 30 to 6 months. The longer duration residential programs are more on the rare side. Because the individual does not leave the facility, time is spent attending groups and individual counseling. Some programs have family programs.

Informative sessions about addiction, relapse prevention, and life skills can help individuals gain a better understanding of their condition and develop the tools necessary for long-term recovery. You will not be required to summit urine samples and attend self-help meetings if you don't want to (although recommended). I support whatever self-help option the person wants to do. Typically it is a 12 step group, SMART Recovery, or a church based program.
Individualized Mental Health:

Family Therapy:
Involving family members in the treatment process can be crucial, as it helps address family dynamics, educate loved ones about addiction, and create a supportive environment for the individual in recovery.
Case management:
I will support you in finding community resources that you may need.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT):
Some individuals may benefit from medications that help manage cravings and withdrawal symptoms. MAT is often used in conjunction with counseling and behavioral therapies. I will encourage you to work with a provider if you need medication support.
Aftercare and Relapse Prevention:
Planning for the period after formal treatment is essential. Aftercare services may include ongoing counseling, support groups, and strategies for relapse prevention.
Hypnosis:
Hypnosis is used to help an individual change their beliefs and behaviors. Very often those struggling with addictions struggle with low-self esteem, shame, guilt, and other strong negative emotions. Hypnosis can be used to help re-wire the brain.
During the entire time of this process, the client will be closely monitored for the appropriate level of care. If a higher level of care is needed, I will help the individual move to the next level of care.
